"MP3" est l’abrégé de "MPEG-1 audio layer-3". Il s’agit d’un standard de compression audio (son, musique, voix) lancé en 1996 par le MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). Le fichier audio est compressé à 1/10e du fichier d’origine, sans perte de qualité sonore, avec une vitesse d’encodage de 128 Kbps (kilobits par seconde). Son extension de fichier est ".mp3". Le format MP3 connaît un grand succès. Les fichiers MP3 concurrencent vite les CD, pour des raisons pratiques: téléchargement immédiat, stockage facile, coût peu élevé, achat de titres à l’unité, etc. La taille des disques durs augmentant régulièrement, les mélomanes peuvent constituer une véritable discothèque de MP3 dans leur ordinateur. En 2000, les PDA (personal digital assistants) du marché intègrent un lecteur de MP3. Le mouvement se poursuit ensuite avec l’apparition de baladeurs numériques et de sites légaux de téléchargement de musique. Le format MP3 sert aussi à numériser des livres audio.
